Intelligent power management company Eaton today announced it has expanded its family of self-cooling server racks with the North American launch of its new SmartRack® 5.5 kW self-cooling server rack, the highest capacity in-rack cooling solution available. Designed for server rooms and edge applications in enterprise, manufacturing, government and telecom environments – as well as traditional network closets – the new solution provides precision cooling within the rack to help prevent equipment shutdowns, malfunctions and other failures caused by overheating.

Organizations across industries are increasingly incorporating edge computing into their IT operations, leading them to deploy single-rack micro data centers in edge environments to support critical workloads. Eaton’s SmartRack 5.5 kW self-cooling server rack delivers the sophistication required to cool mission-critical IT equipment, eliminating the potential for overheating that can lead to equipment failures or unplanned downtime.

With the largest-capacity, self-contained rack-mountable cooling unit available in the marketplace, the SmartRack 5.5 kW self-cooling server rack eliminates the need for an aisle cooling unit or centralized HVAC-based cooling system. The unit offers all the functionality IT professionals require to cool mission-critical equipment while minimizing costs and enhancing network management.

Key features of the SmartRack 5.5 kW self-cooling server rack include:

Efficient operation: The solution is equipped with closed-loop cooling to deliver the most effective and efficient cooling to critical IT equipment while minimizing operational interruptions. With innovative features such as variable fan speeds to dynamically and automatically adjust as needed, a built-in evaporator and condenser and insulated doors and panels, the single-phase 208V rack-mount cooling unit provides high efficiency and streamlines operations.

Convenient deployment: Featuring a self-contained AC unit, a hot air exhaust duct and ceiling duct adapter, the 5.5 kW cooling unit is ideal for managing crowded micro data center environments. The cooling unit is 12U and comes pre-installed at the bottom of a 42U custom rack, reducing installation time and cost by eliminating the need for an HVAC professional installer.

Sophisticated management: An integrated network management card enables the cooling unit to be remotely managed as a network device with SNMP remote management using Eaton’s Distributed IT Performance Management (DITPM) software, part of Eaton’s Brightlayer Data Centers suite. Customers can also use the Eaton Environmental Monitoring Probe (EMP) Gen 2 to collect temperature and humidity readings and monitor environmental data remotely.

Enhanced control: The 5.5 kW cooling unit features an intuitive 7-inch touchscreen LCD display to enable ease of commissioning and diagnostics. Additionally, the pre-installed emergency ventilation at the top of the rack helps prevent IT equipment from overheating in case of a system failure due to a power outage or equipment malfunction.
