The True Cost of a Battery

Tom Shannon, Director of Business Development • BatteryDAQ, Inc.

It is an established practice for design engineers to follow a process for selecting the best battery for a project or application, by submitting the choices through a balanced approach that compared technical requirements and goals, to cost and ongoing maintenance requirements. <read more>

Designing and Managing Custom Battery Pack Plastic Enclosures

Anton Beck, Battery Product Manager • Epec Engineered Technologies

Customers are often unfamiliar with battery regulatory requirements which can lead to complications during the design of plastic enclosures. Understanding some of the design and management elements will help avoid production process complications. With any enclosure, the most important aspect is that the enclosure must be able to support the battery itself. It must also pass rigorous tests, especially when associated with transportation safety certifications. <read more>

How to Improve Battery Safety? Find Out in the Free Online Seminar

NetzschLight-weight, high power density cells have dramatically changed the technology landscape over the last 20 years.  In particular, Li-Ion cells have taken a leading role in providing the portable power necessary for these technologies.  These same Li-ion cells have also been a source of many well documented  “thermal runaway” events.  The cost of these events have been dramatic for both cell manufacturer and their added-value partners.  Adiabatic calorimetry has been the tool most often used to characterize cells and measure thermal runaway.  The online seminar will focus on adiabatic calorimetry, its strengths and limitations, and its application to small and large cells and packs.

Expanding Technology for Advanced Battery Applications & Fuel Cells

dexmetDexmet has taken the “Expanding Technology” to the next generation of advancements, the micro-mesh material manufactured by Dexmet is infinitely variable, and the proprietary equipment developed anddesigned at Dexmet produces expanded material with smaller holes than anyone else and produces material that is thinner than anyone else in our marketplace. The expansion process produces a very consistent product as far as open area, hole size and conductivity.

Dexmet expanded materials are perfect for Advanced Batteries Applications and Fuel Cells, especially where you are using multi stacks of materials and you need consistent conductivity from stack to stack also the expansion process is more cost effective unlike perforated material.

The expansion process allows you to yield higher amounts of material than what you put in, this is especially important when your application requires expensive materials like platinum, niobium, zirconium and titanium.

Simultaneous 2-Side Electrode Coating
MEGTECAs the lithium ion battery industry matures, pressure to decrease costs mounts. Battery manufacturers are seeking to lower material as well as processing costs. The traditional approach for battery electrode manufacture is to coat one side at a time, thus requiring two (2) passes through the coating line. A more efficient method is to coat both sides in a single pass. This can be accomplished in two different ways:
1) Sequential or tandem coating system
2) Simultaneous two side coating

B&W MEGTEC brought innovation to the slot die coating system with vertical die tensioned web coating. In addition, B&W MEGTEC’s flotation drying technology is an integral part of this system. The benefits of simultaneous two side coating are:
1) Twice the throughput compared to single side coaters
2) Smaller line footprint than tandem line
3) Lower capital cost and operating cost than tandem coating line
