Shippers of Lithium Batteries and Equipment Experience Delays as New Air Transport Requirements Take Effect

Newly enacted regulations for transporting lithium batteries and lithium battery-powered equipment are causing various holdups due to a lack of awareness among some shipping and transport personnel. New requirements for shipping lithium batteries and lithium battery-powered equipment under the new 2013-2014 International Civil Aviation Organization’s Technical Instructions on the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods (ICAO TI) came into force on January 1st, 2013. <read more>

“Popcorn” Particle Pathways Promise Better Lithium-Ion Batteries

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have confirmed the particle-by-particle mechanism by which lithium ions move in and out of electrodes made of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, or LFP), findings that could lead to better performance in lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, medical equipment and aircraft. <read more>

A123 Energy Solutions Expands Global Grid Energy Storage Installations
A123 Energy Solutions has announced the first commissioning of its Long Duration (LD) Grid Storage Solution in Hawaii for the Maui Electric Company (MECO). The energy storage installation can provide 1MW for up to one hour, and will perform services to increase electric grid operational efficiency, stability, and power quality. Installed at an existing MECO substation, the 1MWh energy storage system was packaged in a 20-foot container and shipped to the site fully assembled and tested. <read more>

1Motion Control 2013 will be co-located with WESTEC 2013 on October 15-17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Focused on the latest trends and advancements in the design and operation of motion control systems and power electronics for machine and product design, manufacturing and industrial applications, the conference will consist of one day of intensive master-class workshops plus two days of technical and market-opportunity sessions, and will be coordinated with an exhibit pavilion that will be part of the WESTEC exhibition.
